The time from 6 pm to 9 pm is proving to be the most dangerous on Indian roads. During the year 2021, most of the road accidents recorded across the country took place during this period. This was revealed in the annual report titled ‘Road Accidents in India 2021’ released by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Tuesday.

The minimum number of accidents occurred from 12 midnight to 6 am. During the year 2021, a total of 4,12,432 road accidents were registered in the country, in which 1,53,972 people lost their lives while 3,84,448 people were injured. The special thing is that most of the road accidents (95785) happened due to overspeed.

According to the report, in 2021, the number of accidents that took place between 6 pm and 9 pm every day was 20.7 percent of the total accidents. Not only this, the said trend of accidents in this time period is continuing for the last five years. According to the report, the second time period in which more road accidents occur every day in the country is from 3 pm to 6 pm, in which 17.8 percent road accidents were recorded during 2021. During the year 2021, there were 4,12,432 road accidents across the country, in which maximum 85,179 accidents took place between 6 pm and 9 pm while 73,467 accidents took place between 3 pm and 6 pm. According to the data given on a monthly basis about road accidents in the report, during 2021, the highest number of road accidents were recorded in January at 40,305, in which 14,575 people died.

The report on road accident fatalities across the country also revealed that out of a total of 4,12,432 accidents, 1,28,825 (31.2 per cent) occurred on national highways and expressways, 96,382 (23.4 per cent) on state highways and The remaining 1,87,225 (45.4 per cent) happened on other roads. Most of these dead are in the age group of 18-45 years and it accounts for about 67 per cent of the total accident deaths. Among the top 10 states during the year 2021, the highest number of road accidents on national highways occurred in Tamil Nadu while the highest number of road accident deaths occurred in Uttar Pradesh.

Total 10983 road accidents in Punjab in 2021
According to the report, during the year 2021, there were 5871 road accidents in Punjab, in which 4589 people died. 3072 people were also injured in these accidents. The number of road accidents of the most serious type was 4250 and in this case Punjab stood at 15th position in the country. Punjab ranked third in the country in terms of road accident deaths at 78.2 per cent.

A total of 10983 accidents took place in the state during 2021, 4250 serious accidents, 1034 accidents resulted in serious injuries, 522 minor injuries while no one was hurt in 65 accidents. Out of these, 2288 accidents took place on National Highways passing through Punjab, in which 1950 people lost their lives and 1100 people were injured.

Road accidents increased as compared to 2020

While the number of accidents per 100 people killed in road accidents was 36 per cent in the year 2020, it increased to 37.3 per cent in 2021. The highest accident severity was recorded in Mizoram (81) during 2021. After this, Bihar (80) and Punjab (78) remained at number three.

The number of serious road accidents in almost 60 per cent of the states is higher than the national average. Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana reported road accidents and deaths less than the national average, while Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh reported more accidents and deaths than the national average.

Overspeed killed 40450 people
During the year 2021, 95785 accidents occurred due to overspeed in which 40,450 deaths occurred. Drunk drivers caused 2949 accidents in which 1352 people lost their lives. Whereas, 5568 accidents took place due to wrong side driving, in which 2823 people lost their lives. In 555 cases of jumping red light, 222 people died while using mobile phone while driving resulted in 1997 accidents in which 1040 people died.
