The opposition besieged the government over the deaths in Sonipat and Panipat due to spurious liquor. INLD MLA Abhay Chautala and the State Home Minister had a heated exchange regarding the death toll. Vij placed figures in the House that since 2016, 36 people have died due to spurious liquor in the state.

Describing these figures as imaginary, Abhay Chautala cited a recent report presented in the Parliament, in which the Haryana government has accepted that 489 people have died during this period. After which the Home Minister said that he will get the matter investigated and strict action will be taken against those who have given wrong figures.

During the calling attention motion brought in the House, Abhay Chautala fiercely attacked the state government. Chautala said that the names of those who make and sell poisonous liquor should be revealed. In 2020 also, 47 people died after consuming spurious liquor.

At that time also this issue was raised in the Legislative Assembly. Then the government had handed over its investigation to the SIT, but no report has been received till date. Apart from the deaths due to spurious liquor, there have also been about 84 deaths due to overdose of Chitta which were youths of 18 to 35 years.

Chautala alleged that contrary to the claims of the government, instead of ending the trade of spurious liquor, it is increasing continuously. The liquor mafia’s strings are also connected to the liquor distillery. At the same time, Congress MLA from NIT Faridabad Neeraj Sharma and Congress MLA from Assandh Shamsher Gogi also besieged the government. Both the MLAs said that youths are continuously dying in the state due to drug addiction and the government has failed to stop drug smuggling and spurious liquor.

Government should take action by making public the list of brokers of police stations
Abhay said that the Haryana government has recently prepared a list of touts in police stations across the state. There are names of 45 brokers in the list of Faridabad district. These include the names of Amar Chechi and Rajpal Nagar alias Mama. He also asked Anil Vij that you must also know him. Then addressing Kanwarpal Gurjar, Chautala said, you know. The INLD MLA demanded that an inquiry should be conducted to find out who these people are and the House should be informed as to whom they are close to. Chautala demanded that the list of the entire state should be made public and action should also be taken against them.

Vij said when the opposition surrounded – at least I will not spare the culprits

During the calling attention motion on spurious liquor, the genie of liquor scam, which was suppressed for two years, once again came out in the Vidhan Sabha. INLD MLA Abhay Chautala and Congress MLA Neeraj Sharma targeted the government over the liquor scam. Opposition MLAs alleged that the government is repeatedly constituting committees to suppress this scam, but action is not being taken against the culprits on the reports of the committees.

In response, Vij assured the House that at least he was not going to spare the culprits after the vigilance report came. Vigilance has recorded statements of 209 liquor contractors, 111 police officers and employees, 869 gazetted and non-gazetted officers of excise department and people related to 23 distilleries in this case, Vij said. The recorded statements are being reviewed. Vigilance has also registered an FIR, under which a fine of Rs 63 crore 15 lakh 17 thousand 600 has been imposed. More than seven crore rupees have also been recovered. Some cases are still sub judice.

TC Gupta recommended action against those responsible

The SET constituted under the chairmanship of IAS TC Gupta to investigate the liquor scam submitted its report to the government on 30 July 2020. It made recommendations for action against the officials and suggested systematic improvements in the working of the excise department. In the same matter, a one-man committee headed by the Chief Secretary was formed which would study the reports and recommendations of all the teams and initiate suitable action against the wrong-doers along with corrective measures. This will include the report of the SIT constituted under the chairmanship of TC Gupta, IPS Kala Ramachandran, IPS Srikant Jadhav and the investigation of the Vigilance Bureau.

This is liquor scam case
The seized liquor was kept in a godown by the Haryana government at Kharkhoda in Sonipat. The owner of the godown where the liquor was kept, along with the police got the liquor stolen and illegally sold foreign liquor worth crores of rupees. After the liquor scam came to light, on the orders of Home Minister Anil Vij, Home Secretary Vijay Vardhan constituted an SIT headed by senior IAS TC Gupta for investigation across the state.
