The UAE (United Arab Emirates) has banned travel visas for single name passport holders. This decision has given a big blow to Punjabis. Thousands of people travel to Gulf countries from Punjab. Due to business and other reasons, a large number of people from Punjab have settled in UAE.
Passengers with the same name on their passports who are traveling on tourist visit or any other type of visa will not be allowed from Monday, UAE authorities told their trade partner Indigo Airlines. Now both the first and last name must be present on the passport to travel to the UAE. There are 10 daily flights from Punjab’s Amritsar and Chandigarh to UAE’s Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. Hundreds of people travel in these daily. In a year this number reaches lakhs.
Will get a discount, will have to change the passport
These orders will not apply to UAE permanent visa holders and those holding residence permits. For this, they have to get the passport updated by writing the same name in both the first and last name columns. At the same time, Indigo has said that if any passenger needs more information than this, then he can get detailed information by visiting the website.
Phones started ringing at immigration offices
After the order, people started thronging the offices of immigration agents and other travel agencies in the cities of Punjab. Nidhi Behl, director of Discovery Tour and Travel Agency, told that there are many people who do not have surname in their passport. After the order of UAE, a large number of people are getting calls to change the name in passport and to check the veracity of these orders.
