Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has said that if any Panchayat under his constituency Kotkapura certifies that they have not burnt the stubble, then I will give them Rs 1 lakh from my discretionary grant.

The process of stubble burning continues in Punjab. According to the data of Punjab Remote Sensing Center based in Ludhiana, 1,034 incidents of stubble burning have been registered in Tarn Taran. This figure is the highest in the state. After this, 895 cases have been registered in Amritsar and 324 in Gurdaspur.

There is an alarming rise in air pollution levels in the National Capital Region (NCR) in October and November. This is also one of the reasons behind the excessive burning of stubble in Punjab and Haryana. At the same time, the situation becomes more serious due to the bursting of crackers on Diwali. An official of the Agriculture Department said that 35 per cent paddy harvesting has been completed in Punjab. Harvesting was delayed by at least 10 days in September due to unseasonal rains. In this Kharif season, Punjab has about 30.84 lakh hectares of paddy area.

The cases of stubble burning in the fields have increased four-fold since October 10. Till October 10, there were 718 incidents of stubble burning in the state. Amidst all this, Pathankot district has emerged as an example. Not a single incident of stubble burning has been reported in Pathankot this year.

If compared with the last two years, this year the situation is slightly better. Punjab had recorded 10,785 and 5,438 stubble burning incidents in 2020 and 2021 respectively till October 22. As on 22 October, 582 cases were registered in Punjab. According to the data, 1,341 and 1,111 stubble burning incidents were registered on the same day in 2020 and 2021.
